NEXRAD Doppler radar has become a staple for up to the minute tracking of severe storm events. Besides its use for tracking thunderstorms and tornados it has been developed to the point that it can accurately estimate precipitation totals at a very fine spatial resolution of 4km by 4km. Imagine being able to use the power of NEXRAD to track rainfall amounts at any location in the United States instead of having to check rain gauges at remote locations.
Spatial Rainfall Consulting has developed powerful free online tools that allow you to zoom in on a Google map to anywhere and extract daily rainfall values for any NEXRAD cell. We have developed two online applications that allow the user to either choose a location and extract the daily rainfall values for a user supplied date range OR choose their location and create a clickable, interactive rainfall surface for an individual storm event over the top of a Google map.
For users who don't want to load up a web page everytime they want to check rainfall data, let us do to the work and just email you the rain data. Just subscribe to our rainfall email service and get daily rainfall data every morning when it rains in the previous 24 hours. You will only receive daily emails on days when it actually rains - so no clogging up your inbox with zero rainfall emails. You can log up to 25 individual locations and in addition to receiving daily data, you will get weekly, monthly and seasonal data summaries. You will also be able to log into your account, easily add or drop locations and create custom rainfall reports that can be cut and pasted into a spreadsheet.
A basic subscription to the NEXRAD rainfall email service is $5 per month or a little more than a $1 a week. That is a lot cheaper than driving out to remote fields to check a rain gauge all of the time. A basic subscription allows to you map and store up to 25 individual locations anywhere in the lower 48 states. You are able to generate individual indentifiers for each site and you will get an automatically generated weekly email that sends you a formatted table of the daily rainfall amounts and the weekly total for each site every Monday morning. At any time you can log into the system and generate your own summary table and rainfall for all of your sites. Also at any time you can choose new sites, delete old sites or rename them.
